This prize is sponsored by the VMSC Management Committee in support of young scientists presenting their research at AMSA annual conferences, specifically for best student presentation with a focus on temperate marine science.
In 2008, Justin graduated from the University of Wollongong with First Class Honours in Marine Science under the supervision of Dr Todd Minchinton and Proessor David Ayre. Justin's Honours research investigated latitudinal gradients in the settlement and recruitment of an intertidal barnacle and was subsequently published in Marine Ecology Progress Series in 2010. His AMSA presentation was titled : Novel use of infrared technology to test the effect of small scale temperature variability on early life history processes of an intertidal barnacle.
Justin is currently in the final stages of his PhD in which he is investigating the role of temperature variability on the early life history stages of rocky intertidal invertebrates. During his PhD candidature, Justin became particularly interested in understanding how climate change will affect temperate marine communities. Justin believes considerable bias towards tropical communities often exists, and he aspires to contribute to correcting this by undertaking a post-doctoral research fellowship.
