The journal Marine and Freshwater Research has instituted an award for the best student paper published in the journal each year. The inaugural, and significant award went to Allyson O'Brien. Allyson completed this study as part of her Honours project through The University of Melbourne and is now in her final stages of her PhD, supervised by Professor Michael J Keough and Dr Liz Morris. Her field and laboratory work was undertaken at VMSC.
