Justin is generating information on the basic biology and reproduction of elephant fish. Elephant fish are an ancient group of cartilaginous fish, related to sharks and rays. Although little is known in southern Australia, they are taken in commercial fisheries, and Justin's work provides key information for an ecological risk assessment that will be a basis for sustainable management of these fish. Justin's PhD research is jointly supervised by Laurie Laurenson of Deakin University and Terry Walker of PIRVic.
